Crochet Yarn Calculator - How Much Yarn Do I Need?

Crochet Yarn Calculator โ€” How Much Yarn Do I Need? ๐Ÿงถ

Estimate how much yarn your next crochet project needs in seconds. Pick a project and yarn weight, and we'll show the approximate yards, metres and number of balls โ€” so you buy enough the first time.

Quick answer: A worsted-weight baby blanket needs roughly 700โ€“1,000 yards, a throw about 1,800โ€“2,400 yards, a beanie around 150โ€“250 yards, and a small amigurumi about 50โ€“150 yards. Thinner yarn needs more; thicker yarn needs less. Use the calculator below for your exact project.

Estimates assume standard single/double crochet at average tension and include a small safety margin. Lacy stitches use more; very dense stitches use a little less. Always buy one extra ball from the same dye lot.

Prefer a quick lookup? These are typical yardage ranges for common projects in medium/worsted (CYC 4) yarn. For other weights, multiply by the factor in the calculator (thinner = more, thicker = less).

How the yarn calculator works

The amount of yarn a project needs depends on three things: its size, the yarn weight, and the stitch you use. Our calculator starts from a tested worsted-weight baseline for each project, then adjusts for your chosen yarn weight โ€” because thinner yarn means more, smaller stitches to cover the same area (so more yardage), while thicker yarn covers ground faster (less yardage). If you enter the yards per ball from your yarn's label, we also work out how many balls to buy, always rounding up.

Why "yards per ball" matters more than grams

Two balls of the same weight in grams can contain very different lengths of yarn, because fibres have different densities โ€” cotton is heavier than acrylic, for example. Always plan with yardage (or metres), which is printed on the ball band. Our yarn & hook size guide explains how to read a yarn label in full.

Tips to avoid running out

Buy all the yarn for one project at the start, from the same dye lot, so colours match perfectly. Add one extra ball as a safety margin โ€” it's far easier than hunting for a matching lot later. For blankets, check our crochet blanket size chart to confirm the finished dimensions before you calculate.

Frequently asked questions

How much yarn do I need for a baby blanket?

A worsted-weight crochet baby blanket (about 30 ร— 35 inches) needs roughly 700โ€“1,000 yards of yarn, depending on the stitch used.

How much yarn for a throw blanket?

A worsted-weight throw (about 50 ร— 60 inches) typically needs 1,800โ€“2,400 yards. Taller stitches like double crochet use less than single crochet.

How much yarn do I need for an amigurumi?

A small palm-sized amigurumi needs about 50โ€“150 yards of worsted-weight yarn; larger toys need 200โ€“400 yards.

How do I work out how many balls of yarn to buy?

Divide the total yardage needed by the yards per ball printed on the label, then round up and add one extra ball for safety. The calculator above does this for you.

Does stitch type change how much yarn I need?

Yes. Taller stitches (double, treble) cover more area per yard, so they use less yarn than single crochet. Lacy, openwork stitches use more.
