"Made" circumference is smaller than the head because crochet stretches. For very stretchy stitches subtract closer to 2 in; for a stiff, firm fabric subtract about 1 in.
The crochet hat formula
Two simple rules make any hat fit:
1. Circumference: finished hat = head circumference − 1 to 2 in (negative ease lets it hug the head).
2. Height: for a beanie that sits at the ears, make the hat height ≈ head circumference ÷ 3. Add 1–2 in if you want a folded brim.
Start at the crown and increase until the flat circle's diameter equals the hat height minus the straight section — or simply follow a pattern sized for the age you need.
How to measure head circumference
Wrap a soft tape measure around the head, about 1 in above the ears and across the mid-forehead — where the hat will sit. If you can't measure the person, use the age chart above as a reliable standard. New to sizing and gauge? Our yarn & hook size guide explains how gauge affects fit.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a newborn crochet hat?
A newborn hat is made about 11.5–13 inches around with a height of 5–5.5 inches, to fit a head circumference of 13–14 inches.
How much smaller should a crochet hat be than the head?
Make the hat about 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) smaller than the head circumference so it stretches to fit snugly.
What is the average adult crochet hat size?
Adult women's hats are made about 20–21 inches around; adult men's about 21–22.5 inches, with a height of roughly 9–10 inches.
How tall should a crochet beanie be?
For a beanie that sits at the ears, make the height about the head circumference divided by three; add 1–2 inches for a folded brim.
